it is for Bush. It's the day that gave him the only appearance of legitimacy that his administration has.
The only problem was, he spun it into an excuse to attack a country that was not involved with the attack.
Was Saddam a bad man? Yeah. Did he have anything to do with Bin Laden and the war on terror? No. Not really, no.
Who were the main culprits? Well, let's see... the VAST majority were Saudi's. We can't attack Saudi Arabia though... they're just as bad as Iraq, or worse, but they're our "allies".
So, then it must have been Bin Laden... no he screwed the pooch on that one. He flew all of Bin Laden's family out of the country on the same day as the attacks, on a privately chartered plane.
Does everybody realize that 2001 was not the FIRST time something really bad happened on Sept. 11? In fact, these attacks came on the anniversary of one of the dumber and more evil thing our government has done in it's history.
On September 11, 1973, the Chilean military led by General Augusto Pinochet, violently over-threw the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende. Salvador Allende holds a unique place in history as he was the world's first democratically-elected Marxist leader of any nation.
But the U.S. has a standing anti-communism policy that at that time was in full-force. The military coup that ousted Allende was supported by our very own CIA, and indeed (then) Secretary of State Henry Kissinger played a direct role in the military plot.
Allende was elected to power with 36.2% of the vote in 1970 (for reference, our current US president LOST the popular vote). The guy we backed to replace him was a brutal military dictator who, once in power, quickly moved to suppress leftist opposition. Constitutional civil liberties were curtailed, resulting in the deaths of approximately 3,000 Chileans and thousands of political refugees being received in the United States.
Anyway, I'm not saying that the 2001 attacks were justified or anything... I just think people should be aware of the significance of the attacks occurring on that day. Denying that we've done, and continue to do bad things is a dangerous policy that would make George Orwell roll over in his grave. This country seems to have a unique ability to ignore all of the bad things, and only remember the good. The problem is, that kind of self-imposed ignorance is what REALLY pisses off all of these other countries that keep hating us.
They don't hate us because we have freedom and they don't. They hate us because we keep thingying around with other people's countries for our own convenience, regardless of the cost. And, we're doing it again. THAT's what we need to fix to make our country more secure.
We don't need to become a police state. That only makes our GOVERNMENT secure. What we need is to stop thingying around with things that we have no business thingying with. We also need more openness from the government, and we need to get rid of the stupid, antiquated, 100% disenfrachsing Electoral College.
I'm not saying we shouldn't help people who need it, but don't do it just so thingy Cheney can make an extra percentage point. And dear lord, be CAREFUL and up front about why we do what we do. And really... the UN's not a bad thing. We might try actually becomming an official member in good standing (i.e., paying the dues that we've never paid to them).

Here's a nice page that gives some more details on the whole Allende thing. www.americas.org/item_243The very end of it describes, in my opinion, the only REAL way to make the US more secure... "Unless we acknowledge that the U.S. government has helped create international terrorist networks and unless the United States abandons the practice, the cycle of violence will only intensify"
